The ceremony is always designed to suit the wishes of the family.
Humanist ceremonies are infinitely variable and not constricted by any preconceived programmes.
However there are usually common aspects, namely
Entry and exit music plus other music for contemplation. This can either be CDs
or organ.
A tribute to the life of the deceased.
Tributes from close friends or relatives.
Readings of poetry or prose suitable to the occasion
A committal where the curtains close if in a crematorium or the coffin is lowered
into the grave if a burial.
This is obviously the most difficult part for mourners and some prefer that the
curtains do not close. A short act of devotion such as laying on of flowers by
mourners is often performed at this stage.
Closing words
As most ceremonies are restricted to 30 minutes it is sometimes a good precaution to book a double slot if there are going to be a number of people wishing to present tributes or read passages.
